Understanding Donation
Organ and tissue donation is one of the greatest gifts a person can give. Donor families find comfort knowing that their loved one can help others—and donation can provide a bridge between the loss of life and the gift of life.
In 2010, more than 14,000 people chose to give the gift of life. Because of their selfless gifts, the lives of more than 28,000 people were saved.
Transplantation is a miraculous accomplishment in the history of medicine. But despite continuing advances, the need for organs and tissue is vastly greater than the number available for transplantation. More than 110,000 people in the United States are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, including over 1,500 of our Northwest neighbors.
One organ donor can save up to 8 people—but sadly, 18 people die each day waiting for a transplant.
LifeCenter Northwest is one of 58 federally designated nonprofit organ procurement organizations (OPO) in the United States. We work together with families, medical professionals, and communities in Alaska, Montana, North Idaho, and Washington to save lives through organ and tissue donation.
